On 1 July 2021, the Skilled Refugee Migration pilot program commenced to allow Australian businesses to recruit skilled refugees living in host countries overseas.

Employers wishing to access the programme must register and be endorsed by Talent Beyond Borders (TBB) first. Once endorsed, employers can sponsor an approved skilled overseas worker on a permanent or temporary basis, to work in one of 103 ANZSCO skill level 1-4 occupations, via one of the following employer sponsored visa programs:

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (SESR) (subclass 494) visa program with a permanent pathway to a Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) available after three years
  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) (subclass 186) visa program on a direct entry basis
  • Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (subclass 482) visa.

Under the program, employers can access a number of concessions such as reduced English proficiency, no skills assessment, less work experience, age, flexible arrangements for travel documents and police checks.
