Hon. Scott Morrison released the Productivity Commission’s (“PC”) inquiry into the migration system yesterday.
According to David Uren of The Australian, the PC slammed current migration policies for lacking an overall population plan. It also recommended that permanent visas for parents be abolished, or at least visa fees be greatly increased, noting that each year’s intake of parents of migrants costs taxpayers up to $3.2 billion.
The commission said permanent residency for parents should be provided only in extreme, compassionate circumstances, and recommended a new temporary parent visa that would make the children or the parents themselves responsible for covering health and welfare costs.
